The chancellor’s residence on Devonshire Street on the border of Oakland and Shadyside is more than 125 years old and designated an historic landmark by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation. During the Cold War, Mount Sutro was home to a Nike missile site. In 1953, UCSF purchased a 90-acre parcel to the south of the original parcel donated by Sutro, and most of that is now the Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve. In 1976, UCSF designated 58 acres of the Reserve as permanent open space and subsequently increased the size to 61 acres. Originally built in 1912 as the private residence of John M. Olin, this 10,000 square foot building was left to the University upon Olin's death and has served as the Chancellor's house since 1925. The architects were Ferry and Clas, who also designed the Wisconsin State Historical Society Library.

Olin House, with its second and third floors primarily serving as the chancellor’s private residence, is also an important ceremonial and public event venue. Its first floor is often used for public and university functions. In 2005, the home was the site of 35 events serving more than 4,000 guests. The Hotel Chancellor is a historic building in the Mid-Wilshire area of Los Angeles, California. Built in 1924, it was for many years located on the block to the east of the city's famous Ambassador Hotel. The structure was designed by Milton M. Friedman in the Beaux Arts style. It has since been converted from a hotel to an apartment building.
